We all love a gorgeous head of tumbling curls or some flawless waves! The flowy movement seems to take any haircut to the next level and also showcase hair colour in the most perfect way. With curly and wavy hair still trending it’s no surprise that the market for ‘curl making’ tools & products is bigger than ever before leaving us with endless options to create a hair curl. Whilst getting your curls has become easy it’s the keeping them that can be a test! There’s nothing more frustrating than spending all that time getting your curls perfect and then they drop out a few hours later.
Your Franck Provost Breakfast Point hairdressers bring you their top tips to make your hair curls last longer.
Use the correct shampoo and conditioner – Try to plan your hair wash so that it’s not on the same day as your styling. Freshly washed hair can be soft and slippy, meaning your curls have nothing to grip to and can fall out quicker. Use a shampoo and conditioner that is going to assist your curls with a formulation that is on the lighter side so that it doesn’t weigh your hair down. Kerastase Discipline Bain Fluidéaliste Shampoo and Conditioner are super lightweight to help provide fluidity and movement to hair. When using your conditioner use it sparingly and on the ends only to avoid weighing your hair down.
Prep your hair with the right products – Use a product that is going to enhance your curl and help hold them in place. Products like the Loreal Professional Bouncy and Tender styling gel and Siren Waves include curl retention technologies that provide up to 72 hours anti-humidity protection and anti-frizz action. Perfect for defined, bouncy curls without the stiffness that last and last!
Use the best heat curling tools – When looking to purchase a heated curling tool we recommend that you buy the best that you can afford for longer-lasting curl results that don’t compromise on the condition of your hair. Tools like the GHD Curve feature patented ultra-zone technology, delivering the optimum safer-for-hair heat, that is designed to lock in your curls from day to night. When using your tools give them chance to heat up properly and reach their optimum temperature, if your barrel is not hot enough or there isn’t a nice even temperature your curls will not be formed properly and will drop prematurely.
Choose the correct sized tong – Curling tongs come in many different shapes and sizes to create many different curling effects. Generally the larger the barrel of your tong the larger the curl you will create. Larger curls/waves look incredible but they tend to drop out quicker. Ask your hairdresser to experiment before you buy with a smaller sized tong and see how much longer your curls will last.
Let your curls cool down when styling – Hair that’s fresh from a tong can often look ‘too perfect’ and a quick rake through of your fingers gets it looking just right. If you can resist the urge to run your fingers through whilst you’re styling then you can increase the longevity of your curls! Finish your styling, let your hair cool right down and then do your finger raking. For even longer-lasting curls with huge root volume, gently roll up your hair when you release it from the tongs, clip it into a pin-curl and then leave to cool and set. You can do this all over your head or if just key areas where you need more longevity or volume.
Use a great finishing spray – With curly hair, it’s about finding the right balance between hold and flexibility. Use a finishing spray that’s too light on hold and your curls won’t last very long. Use a finishing spray that’s too firm and you run the risk of looking like you have ‘click-on lego hair!’ Loreal Professional have found the perfect ratio of hold to flexibility with their Infinium hair lacquer spray which is a must for helping to hold curls in place for longer.
No touching your hair throughout the day – We know it can be tempting to touch your hair whilst it’s looking so fab, but the natural moisture and oils on your hands will eventually wreak havoc with your curls. So if you want your fabulous curls to last as long as possible – keep your hands off!
Put your hair up whilst you sleep – Nobody wants to go to bed with beautiful bouncy curls and wake up looking like you’ve got a birds nest on your head! If you have a tendency to toss and turn at night then we recommend you don’t leave your hair down at night. Instead, gently twist your hair up and loosely clip up the top of your head with a large clip. In the morning, simply unclip and let those untouched curls tumble out. If you want to be extra bougie then buy yourself a silk pillowcase – silk creates minimal friction against your hair whilst you’re sleeping for even less frizz and flyaways.
Use a shower cap when showering – When taking a shower or having a soak in the bath it’s important to cover up your curls to avoid humidity and splashes of water. Too much of either of those and you can quickly wave goodbye to your curls. Shower caps might not be the sexiest look, but they work wonders! Wrap your hair in a towel and then double layer with your shower cap for extra protection against humidity.
