It comes around every year but for some reason the cold snap of winter seems to take us by surprise every time! If there’s one thing that we don’t forget in a hurry, it’s the effects that the cold winter air conditions can have on our hair as well as the constant moving from the harsh outdoor elements into indoor heating can do a real number on our luscious locks. Hair can begin to look dull and feel dry and brittle. Our team at Franck Provost Rozelle bring us their top winter hair care tips to help reduce those nasty winter effects and stave off the hair damage!
Fight the Frizz
Hair seems to take on a mind of its own in the cold and dry air. You’ve left the house with your hair looking all shiny and smooth but before you know it you’re looking a little crazy with some major static going on. Reduce hair static and frizz by applying a serum to your hair. L’Oréal Professionel Techni.ART Liss Control Plus is a control smoothing serum which can be applied to wet and dry hair to smooth the look of frizz!
Get a Trim
Keep the ends of your hair looking their very best and visit the salon for a little trim. Remove any split ends and take the opportunity to chat to your stylist about your winter hair care regime!
Cover Up
Take the opportunity to rock the ‘eskimo-chic’ look and cover up your head and hair when you’re out and about with a hat, hood, scarf or whatever you can get your hands to prevent the cold air from zapping the moisture from your hair!
Avoid Heat Styling
Heated styling tools are a gift from heaven and we love them! But really is such a thing as ‘too much of a good thing’. Your hair is pretty delicate around this time of year so be mindful with the amount of heated styling you do to avoid extra moisture loss. Experiment with hairstyles that you don’t need the heat to achieve and if you simply must use those straighteners or tongs then make sure you’re using a heat protection product like the Kerastase Genesis Defense Thermique Anti-Breakage Blowdry Spray.
Deep Condition Weekly
Just like your winter skin-care routine you should up your winter hair-care routine. Level up with a weekly deep conditioning treatment at home. Essential to help reverse the drying effects of the cold by boosting hydration, strength and shine. Ask your stylist to prescribe the perfect winter home hair-care regime for you.
Don’t Leave the House with Wet Hair
One of the biggest winter hair no-no’s is going outside with wet or damp hair. We know that we can be a bit time poor in the mornings sometimes but cold air + wet hair is a first class ticket to hair breakage and colour fade due to the expanding of the hair shaft.
Avoid Washing Too Often
A once weekly or twice weekly hair wash with some clever use of a dry shampoo in the winter is ample. By washing your hair too often you’ll only strip your hair and scalp of its natural and protective oils which will cause further dryness. We love Kerastase Fresh Affair dry shampoo to help stretch the time between shampoos and for its hair and scalp revitalising properties with vitamin E.
Go for a Darker Shade -
Darker hair is to winter as lighter hair is to summer! Opting for a darker shade of hair in the winter not only looks great and matches your wintery clothes but comes with huge conditioning benefits also. Blonde hair can be a bit of a heavy hitter when it comes to hair condition so by dialling back the lightness and choosing a darker hue for winter you can mitigate some of the drying effects on your hair.
Get a Silk Pillowcase
We need no excuse to buy more homewares, bedding and comfy things but a silk pillowcase really is a winter time must…in-fact we’re touting it as an all year round must! They fight frizz and help retain moisture in the hair – the friction free silky material lets your hair glide over the pillow when you’re sleeping thus helping to prevent snagging, damage and static!
